let the fest season begin

Earlier today I finally got around to checkin' out the newly created Lollapalooza Message Board. I was initially filled with excitement as a batch of posts proclaimed today would not only mark a ticket price increase but, artist additions would be announced. I was psyched. Would The Strokes finally be added? Alas minutes after coming across the news I found out that only the price increase would happen. More artists will be announced...over the coming weeks.

Over in the UK, the Reading / Leeds Festivals made a bunch of additions to there already amazing line-up. NME has the list. Since high school I've wanted to make the journey across the pond to experience at least one of the gigantic fests that occur throughout the summer all across Europe. A guy can dream.

Coachella begins in less than 48 hours. Kanye West was a surprise addition to the Saturday line-up. Amazing set of artists. I can't say I'd rank it as the best of the American fests. None the less this weekend the desert will be dancin.

Franz & Death Cab put on a steller evening of music Tuesday. A lovely evening of music was had. The boys in Death Cab rock out more than I ever imagined, to bad the crowd didn't follow suit. In the crowd's defense, I sat in the bleachers for there set. As a whole the tunes don't make for the best stuff to jump around to. Franz on the other hand can't help but make you move around. I had a blast dancin around and jumpin every which way.

Later today Sonic will enlighten us with two 'special' concert announcements. I'm pretty confident both of these 'announcements' are for shows that have been public knowledge for awhile. The first is looking like the Chili Peppers. This has been out there and published online and off (Edmonton Journal anyone) for sometime. My hope is that they announce a date which would be nice to know. The other show I believe they will be 'announcing' will be the Bright Eyes show in June. I'm 50-50 on this one. I kinda hope it'll be something else, something that hasn't already been announced but I'm not gonna hold my breath. At least if it is Bright Eyes then the chances of ticket sales taking place next week are pretty good.
Oh Sonic, who do you think you are kidding. I know, I know, it's the promoter who wants you to do this. Stand up my brother, stand up. You drop you hints here and there, we appreciate that, but c'mon don't turn these announcements into spectacles. Your better than that.

if i have to fill out one more profile my head is gonna explode

Nexopia, MySpace, Facebook, Hi5, Faceparty

All somewhat similar meeting type webpages that I sadly belong to. Not to mention this blog and my flickr page. Too much for any normal person.

Each one offers it's own unique charm.
Nexopia I believe is based out of Edmonton and provides the most Alberta-centric out of the bunch. Tons of current & ex- Camrosians on it.
MySpace is the best for music. I think there is something like 50 million members making it by far the biggest out of the bunch.
Facebook is a University themed one. I haven't really dug to deep into it to craft a real appreciation for it.
Hi5, if it weren't for the fact I have friends who use it, would not leave a great impression on me.
& finally Faceparty is a British based site that offers users to upgrade there service options for a yearly fee. This one seems interesting and a good business model.

So if you are a member of any of these sites look me up, add me as a friend, it gets lonely out there in cyberspace sometimes. insert tear

the whole world

I just finished reading a nice interview with Eddie Vedder. Check it out here.
It got me thinking about a few upcoming releases slated for next month. One from Pearl Jam & the other Mr. Neil Young. I don't want to go on a rant. What I will say it is nice to see artists take a stand. For me the place where these guys are coming from seems so genuine. If you can check this stuff out.

just a habit

Moneen will be doing a "Megatunes Sideshow" on Monday @ 4:30pm. I hope to check it out. I get the impression that it'll be a little performance (crossing fingers for acoustic) followed up with a signing. Haven't listened to the new album as much as I'd like but what I've heard is quite good.

Amid last minuted studying sessions I've been hooked to Built To Spill. Goes down so easy and leaves me with a warm fuzzy feeling. No ticket info yet for there June 10 show @ Red's. I'm really looking forward to that one.

One down, three to go. Oh weather, why must you be so nice during exams?

Bright Eyes @ Red's Wed. June 7

I guess this was announced yesterday. I caught it in the Journal this morning and got confirmation here, here, & here. Opener will be Gruff Rhys (Supper Furry Animals solo project). I guess the three week Canadian tour mentioned earlier in the week on Pitchfork couldn't be worked out. 8 shows in 10 days across the nation. Warm-up dates for Bonnaroo & a date in Omaha. As cool as it is that Bright Eyes will be in Edmonton I think that performance wise this has a 50-50 chance of being amazing or disappointing. From all the stuff I've read in the past Conor is a bit of drinker and Red's is not the most desired place to her Mr. Oberst sing his songs. Expect a quick sell-out. Ticket info to come...

Red's Closing?

reds, originally uploaded by shook_one.

As I was leaving this morning Global Edmonton reported on its morning news that Red's was shutting its door July 1. Apparently the lease run's out then. Red's is a pretty sketchy venue at best but, it does hold 1600 strong and if it is in fact leaving that will leave a big gap in the Edmonton concert scene. I've been there to see everyone from Alexisonfire to the Pixies to Arcade Fire. more to come...

Canada + Bright Eyes = this summer?!?!?

A nice tidbit popped up this morning on Pitchfork. In a little piece on Bright Eyes and the recording of the new album there is mention of a possible 3 week Canadian Tour for this summer. Bright Eyes in Canada for 3 weeks...holly shit, that would kick so much ass. Most bands who tour Canada blow through in 10-14 days usually with the Maritimes neglected. This has me thinking that if it is true that the whole nation would be visited. I'm not sure if an Edmonton stop is in the works where it would be. My gut is telling me Starlite, mainly because of the anti-coporate slant of Bright Eyes. Reds seems most realistic but its in the biggest mall in the world. Who knows? Bright Eyes in Edmonton would rival any show that is coming up in my humble opinion. It would be up there with Franz/Death Cab, The Strokes, & Chili Peppers. I am crossing my fingers that this comes true.

After some thought, I think the Folk Fest is a real possibility. Makes sense, I guess it all depends when this tour would take place. I could see it being in late June or early July to coincide with the only other scheduled dates Bright Eyes have this year.

why?

The reason Thursday is the band I want to see @ TOC tonite can in a small part be summed up in this pic. Attending my first Warped Tour in '04 Thursday was the first band we saw. Geoff Rickley came out in this ratty grey t-shirt that was ripped to shit, all in all he looked rather geeky, but once the band kicked in this guy became a beast on stage. Larger than life, taking the music to another place. I hope for a repeat this evening.

some thoughts

With the news of the Peppers comin' to town I thought I'd reflect on my concert going past. All day yesterday I listened to the 'Dani California' by RHCP, probably 20 times at least. This is a phenomena that I experience any time a band I really dig announces a show in Edmonton. I get really excited and then start to listen to the group a ton for the course of a few days, sometimes even up to 14 days, and then I move onto other stuff. By the time the actual show rolls around I'm usually in a different place mentally and the excitement factor really isn't present all that much. Saying that, the actual concert usually is a blast but lacks the outward excitement I get when I first find out about a show.

Taste of Chaos is tonite and I'm really not in a state of mind to go see a bunch of emo groups scream about teenage agnst. I started taking down the shit load of flyers we pasted all over the Augustana. The funny thing is that I have not received one phone call or email from anyone regarding the tickets that goes to Augustana and saw a flyer. Instead, the only person that bought one or my two extra tickets saw a bulletin I posted on MySpace. It was worth a shot I guess.

As I type this I'm listening to Thursday. They have recently released a new single from their forthcoming new cd. I've listened to this new song a fair bit. I'm still not sure if I'd give it a thumbs up. I like the chorus but the overall sound is kinda sketchy. I hope that tonite Thursday does play a few songs from the new disc. I'm curious to see what direction they are gonna take the group. They are the only group I actually want to see tonite. I can still recall the one and only time I've seen the boys perform at Warped. All I'll say is it was amazing.

I think is this the largest post I've done with original thoughts. Go me! cheers

"The Fleshy Part Of The Thigh"

New Sopranos this evening. The fourth of the year also marks the last that was sent to critics in advance of the season premiere. I'm expecting Tony to be a bit more mobile. Can't wait.
